    The Establishment and Constitutional Mandate of the ZEC

           

    The ZEC is established by Section 61 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (Constitutional Amendment Act No 17, of 2005) which also defines its membership, appointment of same and its functions as presented below.

    Membership

    The Commission is constituted by 7 Members - henceforth referred to as Commissioners - 3 of whom must be women, who are appointed by the President. The Chairperson is appointed after consultation with the Judicial Service Commission, while the other 6 are appointed from a list of nominees submitted by the Parliamentary Committee on Standing Rules and Orders.     The Secretariat

    The day to day operations of the ZEC are under the direction of the Chief Elections Officer - Mr Lovemore Chipunza Sekeramayi who is constitutionally the head of the Secretariat. The Organogram below shows the current structure of the ZEC pending approval of the proposed structure.
